Innate health is the idea that all people are intrinsically whole. Regardless of past experiences, genetic factors, or other life circumstances, all human beings possess the capacity for mental health and wellbeing. This is not something that must be learned since it is innate; however, it must be realized and actualized.
There are many ways to conceptualize this innate health, from both Eastern and Western philosophical perspectives, but one of the simplest is:
- Mind
- Body
- Spirit
These are three inherent but distinct components of all humans. Thousands of years of philosophical thought have highlighted how imbalance among these intrinsic elements can lead to adverse outcomes in health and life.
Gulf Breeze Recovery is a holistic, non-12-step addiction treatment program in Florida. We believe that people are not broken–the principles of innate health simply need to be actualized. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use disorder, reach out to Gulf Breeze Recovery at 833.551.2304.
Innate Health and Wellness Awaits at Gulf Breeze Recovery
Regardless of what paradigm is used to conceptualize innate health, the example of mind, body, and spirit is accessible to most people. Healing occurs when we learn to get out of our own way and seek balance, rather than favoring one aspect of our being over another.
Mind
Perhaps the most relatable example is the mind–the human mind is very powerful and can be a potent resource. Human thought and consciousness are what sets us apart from animals, which are governed by instinct. Rational, clear thought is the hallmark of a healthy mind. However, overthinking a problem or situation can lead to anxiety or stress, which then hinders our decision-making. Negative thoughts can form a pattern that reinforces negative behaviors, ultimately leading to adverse life consequences unless balance is restored.
Body
Likewise, if the body is not maintained through proper nutrition and exercise, it can lead to injury or lethargy and affect our thoughts and feelings. Again, almost everyone can relate to being ill–a bad cold or bout of the flu is no fun and influences the way obligations at home, work, or school are met. Even if we work through the pain or illness, it is not as productive as when our bodies are healthy and often requires more time and energy to accomplish the simplest tasks. This is not sustainable; chronic illness damages the quality of life, just as persistently negative thoughts or destructive emotions can.
Spirit
Finally, the human spirit encompasses passions and emotions, and if this component becomes imbalanced, issues such as depression, apathy, or recklessness can manifest. Regulating emotion and passion is not easy for many people: some cannot control their emotions, while others have difficulty mustering any passion for activities. Both extremes are unhealthy and can lead to adverse life consequences. There are many ways to seek balance in spirit, but they require self-reflection and centering. Some common forms of restoring balance to the spirit are meditation, engaging with the natural world, and religious or spiritual practices like prayer or yoga.
