Drawing a composite sketch of someone with a drug or alcohol addiction isn’t easy.
Why is it so hard to spot?
The person with an addiction might be walking, or staggering, down the street with their bottle in a brown paper bag, or the young person that just passed you driving way too fast with loud music blaring. But it could just as easily be your investment broker, your college professor, or your doctor. It might be a coal miner or an attorney, a truck driver or a bank teller. It might be your son, or your mother. It might be you.
Addiction can be very apparent, or it can be well hidden for a long time with only those closest to the person seeing that there is reason for concern. And sometimes those people pretend the problem isn’t bad for as long as they can, while the person with addiction continues their downward spiral.
People with addiction aren’t stupid, they are often very, very intelligent. They are smart enough to figure out ways to take care of their need for their substance of choice in many creative ways. Some people are financially secure enough to pay for their substances. For those who don’t have the finances, sometimes they will sell drugs on the side to pay for what they need. Some will steal, not only from strangers, but from family members. Some will work the system, going to multiple doctors with multiple “ailments”, knowing what to say to get a prescription they need – or they know where to find doctors who will write the prescriptions for a fee, and not ask questions.
As they live with their alcohol or drug addiction, they know they need to stop. The 67-year old grandmother knows that a fifth of vodka each day is wrecking her health, the 22-year-old man knows that going into that neighborhood to get his supply of drugs is putting his life on the line every time he goes there, but he goes again and again. The 30-year old prostitute hates what she is doing and would love to go back to finish her degree, but she must get her fix. The 48-year-old business owner knows that he is going to lose both his business and his wife if he doesn’t stop using, but he can’t. They all know they need to quit; they all desperately want to be free of their addiction, but each time they don’t have their substance, their body screams for it. To avoid the pain and avoid the withdrawal they use again, and again, and again. And their guilt and shame get stronger every day. They hate what they are doing but they don’t know how to stop.
