Early this year ABC News personality and 20/20 co-host Elizabeth Vargas had publicly addressed her battle with alcoholism, following her stay at a rehabilitation center. Now, several months later, she is headed back to rehab for her alcohol problem once again.
In a statement released to the Associated Press, Vargas exclaimed, “As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” Vargas said. “I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry.”
Vargas continued to say that she was dedicated to keep fighting against the condition, and once again her employer was supportive in her quest for long-term recovery. While some people may see this as a failure or sorts, many view her admissions as being courageous and applaud her efforts to raise awareness. Hopefully her public battle will inspire others in similar situations to seek help for their substance abuse issues.
Some people who have sought treatment after a relapse wind up choosing a different approach.
